Ancient caravan city declared among the world Heritage of humanity, Chinguitty gained great prestige by his spiritual influence to the point that it was considered the seventh holiest city of Islam.
The minaret of Chinguitty ( topped by the symbolic ostrich egg) became the symbol of Mauritania called until recently Bilad Chinguitty. Some sources referred the foundation of Chinguitty to 660 AH (1261).
